Thank you for your interest in the Alternative Service Break program (ASB). ASB is a unique service-learning experience in which students and faculty engage in direct service to a community, while being immersed in the culture and customs of that community. As you go through the process of researching and proposing a trip, please keep in mind the goals of the ASB program, the mission and values of CSLEPS and that of NC State, and be sure that the trip meets a critical need.
CSLEPS staff will review all proposals and be in contact with you regarding next steps. Based on limited resources, we will try to create as many new partnerships as possible but we will not be able to add all of them. Should your proposal not be accepted for this year, it is possible that your proposal may be held for future opportunities.
As you are researching service partner and site locations, be sure not to make any commitments with the various organizations as to not give the impression that a trip will happen. You are in the research and information gathering phase of the proposal process.
***In general, CSLEPS ASB experiences meet all the following criteria, but we are happy to discuss needs for flexibility based on individual circumstances.
What is a CSLEPS ASB?
- 75% of the trip should focus on community impact (either direct service or service education that culminates in a deliverable to benefit community)
- Drug and Alcohol Free
- The typical ASB structure is 9-18 student participants, 1-2 student team leaders, and 1-2 faculty advisors based on trip complexity.
- All student participants must attend all 4 all-community events 1) reveal night 2) fall all-community meeting 3) all-community service retreat weekend 4) ASB Celebration
- All student team leaders must be enrolled and attend team leader class (Fall and Spring semester) and participate in all 4 all-community events.
- All faculty advisors must attend all advisor training, actively support and participate in team meetings and participate in all 4 all-community events.
- Travel to a location (not on the state department warning list)
- Team carries no more than $2000 cash. All trip expenses prepaid is preferred.
- Doesn’t take students away from academic instruction
- Include pre-service training and teambuilding, reflection during the experience and post-trip evaluation and follow-up
What is Required of every ASB Campus Partner
- Pay at minimum half the program cost for team leader(s) and Advisor – The other half could be paid by the individual traveling
What ASB will do for your trip
- Logistical support pre trip, during trip, and post trip
- Collection of payments and financial process including paying service partner fees and any costs associated with project
- Faculty/staff/student leader training that would include (campus travel policies, student leader training, cultural competency, team-building / group dynamics, reflection, health requirements, and risk/safety/liability)
- Ensuring that all safety protocols are in place not limited to but including:
- Emergency Management Plan
- Access to health history and emergency contact
- Verifying registration with US Embassy through the STEP program
- Provide information about Student Health Center Travel Clinic and our policy that any recommended immunizations are required for travel
- Provide a 24 hour on call staff member during duration of service-learning experience
Goals of the ASB Program
- To help develop and enhance a value for public service, civic engagement and service-learning within the participants
- To develop diverse service teams committed to exploring and advocating for social justice issue
- To help participants reflect on their privileges and begin to use these to break down the systems that afford unearned privilege in our society
- To provide opportunities for participants to reflect on their roles in a global community
- To provide opportunities for cultural and language immersion through service projects with diverse individuals and communities
Timeline of ASB Program

- April/May – Student Team Leaders are selected for upcoming academic year
- May – July – Existing and new partnerships for trips are confirmed.
- July-Sep – Faculty Team Advisors are contacted and placed on team
- August/September – Interest meetings for upcoming trips are held
- September 21, 2016 – Participant Applications Due to CSLEPS
- September 28, 2016 – ASB Reveal Night
- October 5th, 2016 – Participants Confirm
- October – March – Trip Planning, fundraising, team preparation, and travel logistics
What should be included in the proposal?

- What social issue will this trip focus on? (i.e., hunger and homelessness, education, youth, substandard housing, etc.)
- Describe the populations affected
- What is currently being done in the proposed location and how will this trip serve the needs of the community?
- What pre-service training / education is needed related to your topic?
Service Partner / Agency (or agencies)
- What is the name of the organization or agency? (i.e., Habitat for Humanity, El Porvenir, Peacework, Amizade, etc.)
- Contact person at organization including phone, email, and website address
- Agency description and mission statement
- Does the agency have experience working with college aged service-learning programs?
- Can the needs of the agency be meet by short term service projects?
- What are the potential service / volunteer projects with this organization? What will the group be doing?
- Is there a “partner fee” or charge for hosting a group?
- What special skills and abilities do participants need to have to be successful on this trip? (language level, athletic ability, skill related to service project, etc.)
General Trip Location Information
- Research and provide information about the service site location including, but not limited to, political structure, economics and social structure, culture, history and current events
